BISON BITS
     Bison Bits are short facts about the Dallas County R-I School District. Sharing Bison Bits is an effort to share information and transparency with the community, staff, students, and parents.
  • The Dallas County Technical Center offers students seven areas of technical programming from which to choose: Auto Mechanics, Collision Repair Technology, Welding, Building Trades, Graphic Arts, Health Occupations, and Computer Networking.
  • Buffalo High School offers students the opportunity to enroll in several courses in whcih students may receive credit for high school graduation as well as college credit. These courses include the following: Advanced Livestock; Landscape/Greenhouse; Composition I; Composition II; Political Science; Biology; College Algebra; Psychology; World History; World Geography; and Computer Science. Other dual credit courses are available upon request through online opportunities from area universities. 
  • Buffalo High School is one of 230 high schools in Missouri that offers the Missouri Options program for students. Missouri Options is a locally supported program and is currently located at Buffalo High School.
  • Students enrolled in the Missouri Options Program take (and pass) the GED Tests to demonstrate and document the attainment of high school-level skills. The GED score report is one of the academic components required for the awarding of a high school diploma by the local district, and as such, is placed in the student's permanent record. 
  • Each month the district spends approximately $1.33 million dollars to operate the school district.  Total expenditures for this year are approximately $16 million dollars.
  • The costs of all certified staff salaries/benefits for this year are $8,382,600.  The cost of all classified staff salaries/benefits $2,932,055.  The total amount of money budgeted for salaries/benefits for all school employees this year is $11,314,655.   This means that 69% of our 2014-2015 school budget is spent on employee salaries/benefits.
  • The district spends approximately $691,000 in the food services department to provide breakfast, lunches and after school snacks for our students.  Of the total amount spent, $367,000 is spent on food services employee salaries/benefits, which is 53% of the cost of food services.  The district spends $183,000 each year to purchase food and $103,425 to purchase milk for students. 
  • The district serves an average of 1026 lunches, 488 breakfasts and 120 snacks to students in the districts every day.
  • The school district spends approximately $32,500 for electricity each month.  This means a total of $390,000 spent each year to pay for the cost Electricity.
  • The school district spends approximately each year $58,000 for propane. 
  • The student enrollment in the Dallas County R-1 School district was counted at 1909 in September of 2005.  Current enrollment this September is 1671.  This is a decline of 238 students over a period of the last 9 years. 
  • The district had 974 students that qualified for free/reduced lunches in the 2005-2006 school year.  The district had 1104 students that qualified for free/reduced lunches in the 2013-2014 school year.  Over the last eight years, the number of students qualifying for free/reduced lunches has increased by 130 students.
  • The school district receives revenue from three different sources: (1) Local/ County; (2) State; and Federal.  Last year the district received a total of $16,663,354 in revenue.  Local/county revenue accounted for about 39% of the total, state revenue accounted for 46% of the total, and federal revenue accounted for 15% of the revenue.
  • The Dallas Co R-1 School District employs 277 employees.  There are 154 certified employees.  Certified employees include any employees with Missouri Certification (e.g. teachers, counselors, administrators). There are 123 classified employees.  Classified employees include custodians, maintenance, bus drivers, teacher’s aides, and food service workers.
  • The 21st Century Grant will bring in approximately $400,000 this year to provide quality after school programming to our DCR1 students.  Students will have the opportunity to improve their academic skills in communication arts, mathematics and science through fun learning activities in grades k-12.
  • DCR1 is working very hard to improve our graduation rates.  We have seen significant increases in the percentage of students graduating from high school in the last four years: 2011=80%; 2012=81%; 2013=85%; and 2014=87%.  Way to go DCR1 Graduates!
  • The District Preschool program is totally supported by Federal Title I funds.  Two teachers and two teacher's aides annually serve 60 four year olds in the preschool program.
  •  The Dallas Co R1 School District receives approximately $750,000 in Title I funds each year to support instruction at Mallory and Long Lane Elementary Schools.  These funds can only be used to support supplemental mathematics and supplemental communication arts per federal guidelines.  Examples of Title I supported programs include Supplemental Reading, Supplemental Math, and Preschool.
  •  The Dallas County Technical Center (DCTC) serves approximately 200 students from eight school districts.  Districts served include the following:  Dallas Co R-1, Hickory Co R1, Wheatland, Weaubleau, Fair Play, Humansville, Hermitage, and Halfway.
  • The Missouri Options Program is designed to target students who have the capabilities to complete Missouri High School Graduation Requirements, but for a variety of reasons lack the credits needed to graduate with their class and are at risk of leaving school without a high school diploma.
  • Students in the Missouri Options Program will be provided guidance and counseling services consistent with the high school program.  Ongoing academic/career advisement will be provided by the Missouri Options Program instructor, David Mizer, with supplemental guidance and counseling provided, as needed.  Students have access to all educational programs and services available in the school district, have the opportunity to stay in school, receive valuable academic and life-skills instruction, earn a High School diploma, and are eligible to participate in commencement ceremonies.
  • Students enrolled in the Missouri Options Program receive a minimum of 15 hours of academic instruction per week.  Students must also be enrolled in other school supervised instructional activities (career education courses, elective classes, work experience, etc.) and are classified by the district as a full-time student.
  •  The breakdown of DCR1 graduates seeking post secondary education in 2014 was as follows:  17.7% attended four year universities; 19.2% attended a two year college; and 5.4% attended a technical institute.
  • Those students that receive Technical Education at DCR1 have a very high rate of placement in a career that utilizes skills attained from technical courses completed in high school.  Approximately 92.3% of DCR1 students receiving technical training were working in careers utilizing their technical skills as compared to the state average of 61.9%.
  • The average years of experience for teachers in DCR1 is 12.3 years--exactly the same as the average years of experience for teachers in Missouri.
  • The local tax levy in DCR1 is $3.34.  This is significantly lower than the average local tax levy in Missouri which is $4.0452.
  • In 2014, DCR1 had 46.9% of graduates taking the ACT.  DCR1 graduates earned an average score of 21.8--exactly the same composite score as the Missouri average (21.8).
  • In 2014, DCR1 served 121 students in the district supported gifted program.  This is 6.2% of our student population.
  • In 2014, DCR1 provided special education services to 216 students.
  • Each September the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education require all public schools in Missouri to submit the number of students enrolled in the district.  DCR1 reported 1667 students in September 2014, a decline of 38 students when compared with last September count when DCR1 reported an enrollment of 1705.
  • DCR1 receives approximately 46% of its funding ($6.7 million) to operate the school through the state of Missouri.  Current state funding is calculated through a formula that was developed by a state legislative committee (called the State Education Committee) in Senate Bill 287.   This bill was sponsored by Senator Charlie Shields, a member of the Education Committee, and signed into effect by the Governor on August 28, 2005.  The premise of this change to the new funding formula as outlined in SB 287 was to transition the state away from a tax-rate driven education funding formula to a student needs based education funding formula.
  • Buffalo High School offers students the opportunity for credit recovery through its locally supported Gold program.  The Gold program is currently housed in the high school and offers students the opportunity to earn credits needed in order to complete requirements needed for high school graduation. 
  • The local tax levy for DCR1 in 2014 was $3.35.  This levy generated $3.7 million dollars in local and delinquent taxes.  This is approximately 38% of the revenue received to operate the school district.
  • The percentage of students that dropped out of DCR1 in 2014 was 2.1% compared to the average dropout rate in Missouri of 2.5%.
  • Public school districts in Missouri must be accredited to stay in operation.  The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education rates school districts according to a formal process called the Missouri School Improvement Program (MSIP).  MSIP began in 1990 and entered its fifth version in 2013.  DCR1 earned 94.3% of points possible in the most recent MSIP report, called the Annual Performance Report (APR).
  • Eighth graders at BPMS have the opportunity to take Algebra, English and Spanish for high school credit.
